JAVA JAM

"Eclectic Americana Pop Folk with Celtic and Spanish undertones..." Join us on Friday, January 25th in historical downtown Wharton for the most unique musical experience around! Schedule: 6 to 7 pm - Opening Music 7 to 8 pm - Buffet 8 to 9 pm - Second Round of Music What you'll need to enjoy the evening: 1. Bring a covered dish, enough for yourself and a bit extra. 2. Bring your own wine if you wish. 3. $15 per person to help pay for the guest musicians. This is an honor system donation designed to help attract and pay a little gas money to out-of-town musicians. 4. Pick up a free ticket when you arrive for entry into our monthly give-away.

Meet Our Guest Performers: ShAnnie is a duo comprised of Shan Kowert & Annie Acton. They formed in 2005 and in 2007 they released their debut cd, "Water Over Stones", produced by John M. Greenberg, which earned them a nomination for Vocal Duo at the 2008 Texas Music Awards. In 2011 they released their second cd, "The Station" produced by John Inmon, which won ShAnnie "Vocal Duo of the Year" and John Inmon "Producer of the Year." "Eclectic Americana Pop Folk with Celtic and Spanish undertones"... that's what some are saying about the music of ShAnnie. Their voices are clean and soothing but with much fervor, and the music is beautifully accompanied by a 6 or 12 string acoustic guitar or piano. ShAnnie's music is soulful, lyrical and mesmerizing. Annie will captivate you with her dramatic visual performance. It's been said by many that when "Annie sings, you believe." Shan, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist; crosspicks the guitar strings or moves across the piano keys enthusiastically enhancing every song. Whether it is Annie or Shan taking the vocal lead, the other voice is floating around in harmony. The chemistry of these two people will not only lure you in, but keep you wanting more. About the Show: In this riotously funny Southern-fried comedy, the three Verdeen cousins—Gaynelle, Peaches, and Jimmie Wyvette — could not have picked a worse time to throw their family reunion. Their outrageous antics have delighted local gossips in the small town of Sweetgum and the eyes of Texas are upon them. Having “accidentally” crashed her minivan through the bedroom wall of her husband’s girlfriend’s doublewide, Gaynelle is one frazzled nerve away from a spectacular meltdown. Peaches, a saucy firebrand and the number one mortuarial cosmetologist in the tri-county area, is struggling to decide if it’s time to have her long-absent trucker husband declared dead. And Jimmie Wyvette, the rough-around-the-edges store manager of Whatley’s Western Wear, is resorting to extreme measures to outmaneuver a priss-pot neighbor for the affections of Sweetgum’s newest widower. As this fast-paced romp barrels toward its uproarious climax, you’ll wish your own family...  More >>

Java Jam

Back in second grade, all Chad Hancock wanted for Christmas was a tape recorder. It was that year that Chad learned the truth about Santa Claus, when instead of an awesome tape recorder he got a Sears guitar and a Mel Bay song book. His older sister Annie taught him some chords and let him hang out with her and her teenage friends, so it wasn’t long before Chad saw the guitar as something cooler than a tape recorder. Ten minute practice sessions twice a day for a few years taught him enough to impress his friends and get a few gigs. In his early twenties, Annie called him up and asked if he wanted to record with her in Nashville, and naturally Chad jumped at the chance. While in Nashville, Chad was involved in a terrible motorcycle accident that left him without the use of his hands. Doctors assured him that he would never play again. Defeated and depressed, Chad returned to Texas and got a job at a music store.

Dan Douglass, the owner of the music store, was one of the nation’s premiere guitar restoration and repair masters, and after some time offered to apprentice Chad in the craft of guitar making, vintage restoration, and guitar repair. In 1988, after a two year formal apprenticeship, Chad became a member of The Guild of American Luthiers. He opened his first shop in College Station Texas, across from the North Gate of Texas A+M while obtaining a degree in mechanical engineering. After school, Chad joined the U.S. Navy and flew combat operations in Croatia and Bosnia. After the service, Chad moved to Austin Texas and met his lovely wife Vanessa, and are together raising a beautiful daughter: Gwendolynn Grace. Chad is currently owner and operator of Texas Hill Country Guitars restoring and repairing vintage and broken guitars.

The doctors were wrong. Chad eventually re-taught himself how to play guitar. Now Chad loves to perform by playing and telling stories and has performed onstage all over the great state of Texas. He has played with Robert Earl Keen, Burt Wills, Chris Duarte and others, his latest and most prestigious gig being part of The Java Jam House Band in Wharton Texas. Chad loves to play and tell stories in the tradition of the folklorist. Some tales are tall – big as Texas – but most are true. In the end, he just wants you to enjoy yourself, think a little bit, and share some laughs.

Come on out this Friday and enjoy Wharton’s premier live music entertainment venue. Bring a covered dish of your choice, with a little extra to share, and $15 per person cover charge (kids are free). See www.milamstcoffee.com for directions and more info.
